- 1 cup yellow lentils
- 4 cups water
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 1 inch ginger, minced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 teaspoons turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 teaspoon coriander powder
- 1 teaspoon garam masala
- 2 tablespoons oil
- Salt to taste
- 2 tablespoons fresh coriander, for garnish
- Rinse the yellow lentils under cold water and drain.
- In a pot, heat the oil over medium heat and add cumin seeds.
- Once the seeds start to splutter, add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
- Add ginger and garlic, cooking for another minute.
- Stir in tomatoes, turmeric powder, coriander powder, and salt, cooking until the tomatoes soften.
- Add the lentils and water, bringing to a boil.
- Reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 30-40 minutes, or until lentils are soft.
- Stir in garam masala and cook for an additional 5 minutes.
- Garnish with fresh coriander before serving.
Notes
- For a creamier consistency, you can blend half of the dal.
- Serve with rice or naan for a complete meal.
