A traditional German Easter bread, Osterbrot is sweet and often decorated with eggs and other seasonal symbols.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet instant yeast
  • 1/4 cup raisins (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add butter, eggs, and vanilla extract to the yeast mixture, mixing well.
  3. Stir in salt and flour, one cup at a time, until a dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm area for about 1 hour.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  7. Punch down the dough and form it into a loaf or braid shapes.
  8. Place on a baking sheet and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  9. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Let cool before slicing.

Notes

  • Osterbrot can be decorated with colored eggs or sprinkles before baking for a festive look.
  • For a richer version, you can add nuts or chocolate chips.
